About Me

My name is Candace Gotfryd, and I have had the pleasure of teaching Physical Education and Health at Union since 2016. With nearly a decade of experience, I am passionate about helping students develop lifelong habits that promote physical and mental well-being.

I am married and a proud mother of three wonderful children, who keep me on my toes and remind me daily of the importance of staying active and healthy.

Outside of school, I have a variety of hobbies that help me stay balanced and energized. I love working out, whether it’s a challenging run, a strength training session, or trying out a new fitness class. Staying active is not just something I teach—it’s something I live!

I also have a passion for traveling. Exploring new places and experiencing different cultures is something that I find incredibly enriching. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or an international adventure, I believe that travel broadens our perspectives and helps us grow.

I look forward to bringing my passion for health, fitness, and lifelong learning into the classroom every day, and I am excited to help your children grow and thrive this school year!

Union Elementary Goals

Illinois State Goals for elementary students are to focus on their motor and multi-tasking skills, demonstrate control when performing fundamental locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative skills, understand spatial awareness and relationships to objects and people. We will focus on the students’ directionality and functional words to help them with following directions, as well as safety. Students also will begin to learn about stretching and exercising.

Union Middle School Goals

Illinois State Goals for middle school students are to:

-Develop their control when performing combinations and sequences of locomotor patterns within activities

-Showing students how to analyze efficient and inefficient movement

-Having students identify offensive, defensive, and cooperative strategies in selected activities

-Give knowledge of team sports, communicating, and leadership

Every month students will focus on a skill, whether it be team or individual related. To assess students’ fitness levels, students will be tested every trimester. These are based off of the Presidential Fitness Testing.

Presidential Fitness Assessment
1. Curl-Ups (Muscular Endurance)
2. Pacer-20 m (Aerobic Capacity)
3. Push-ups (Muscular Strength)
4. Sit and Reach (Flexibility)
*As a reminder; all students in grades 5th-8th must change into their required shorts and shirt for P.E.  This prepares students for Joliet Central or Lincoln-Way West P.E. class.
